New refrigerated vehicle for the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn
Share
At the end of October 2024, a special vehicle was delivered that will be used in an unusual area – in the Zugspitze region!
A Mercedes-Benz Atego 4x4 all-wheel drive was delivered to the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn. The vehicle is specially designed for demanding operations in the mountains. Equipped with a Kiesling refrigerated body, it enables the safe transport of temperature-sensitive goods, even under difficult conditions. Permanent all-wheel drive, increased ground clearance and a high payload defy the adverse conditions on the mountain. "We are delighted to be able to supply our customer and partner, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn, with another special product!" says Niklas Kiesling, Managing Director of Kiesling Fahrzeugbau GmbH. Back in 2008, Kiesling had already built a body on a wagon of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn's rack railway, which is still in use today. The catering on the Zugspitze has been further expanded since then and new demands have been placed on logistics. With the new vehicle, the supply chains in the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn's catering facilities can now be optimized. With nine restaurants, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn is one of the largest catering companies in Bavaria. For this reason and due to the special location of the restaurants on the mountain, the logistics for supplying the businesses have become increasingly complex in recent years. In order to optimize these processes, a logistics center is now being set up in Grainau to supply all restaurants. On the one hand, this makes it possible to order larger quantities and containers, which reduces the number of deliveries and thus the overall CO2 footprint. The new refrigerated vehicle also makes it possible to supply the catering establishments countercyclically to the number of guests on the cable cars and access roads. For example, the goods can be delivered in the afternoon when the arrival traffic has passed and fewer guests are taking the cable cars up the mountain. In addition, goods can also be delivered at short notice when there is a high number of guests, which means significantly improved flexibility when ordering food and drinks. With the new vehicle, a flexible and sustainable supply of the catering establishments on the Zugspitze, in the Garmisch-Classic and on the Wank will be possible in the future.
The robust vehicles enable the smooth transport of goods even in extreme terrain and in all weather conditions – whether summer or winter, sun or snow!
The highlights of the vehicle:
- Kiesling FIP body without rear doors, multi-temp configured
- Mercedes-Benz Atego 1530 4x4 all-wheel drive for reliable grip and safety
- Carrier Supra 1150 MT-S
- Bär Cargolift BC2000S4 as rear closure
The new all-wheel drive vehicle is actually the second special vehicle for the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn, which has had a Kiesling refrigerated body on a rack railway carriage since 2008. This still provides supplies on the Zugspitzplatt today!
Kiesling Fahrzeugbau GmbH would like to thank the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn and the Autohaus Hornung for their good cooperation.
